What is citizen science and why is it so important?
According to the Green Paper on Citizen Science from the European Commission, published in 2014, Citizen Science is described as follows
“It is the voluntary and altruistic commitment of citizens to scientific research activities, contributing actively with science, whether through their intellectual effort or by supporting scientific knowledge with the help of various tools and resources.
Your volunteer work provides valuable data to scientific researchers.
Citizens, while contributing their value and that of their data to research, acquire, in an attractive way, new knowledge and skills, as well as a better understanding of the scientific method.
As a result of this open, collaborative, and cross-sectoral scenario, interactions between science, society, and research policies improve, leading to more democratic research, based on evidence-informed decision-making, arising from the scientific method, fully or partially, by these new amateur or non-professional scientists.
